Brain fart...

How in the world did i forget to post after our adoption orientation last week?! It was a great orientation and Nick and I feel very comfortable with them, so I think they are who we will be using. We really liked that they are a pay as you go, not pay up front agency and they are also non-profit.

Here are some of the questions and answers we had
Are there any "hidden" costs that could arise?
Living expenses of BM
Rent
Food
Utilities
Miscellaneous
Child care
Transportation to doctor visits
Lamaze classes
Psychological counseling/therapy
Other
Legal fees

These expenses are generally known before match is made

What is the "average" wait?
From completion of home study…general average is 12 months from book to baby (not match)

How long does the home study process generally take?
They have 10 social workers, 1 will be assigned to us
There will be 4 visits, with 1 being in home
After completion of visits, it will take about 3 weeks for the write up
The home study will not hold up the process. If SW says that we are a go, but has not written up the report yet, we can still move on to the next step

Will we get a copy of the home study report?
They do not provide this for every home study, but will gladly provide it if we ask for it after it’s complete

If our home study is not approved, will we be able to find out why?
Yes

Other home study notes:
Do not need to child proof apartment or even have the things here. They just want to make sure we have a room for the baby, and that we can provide for the child. They expect that we will baby-proof as time goes on, just like any parent would.

How often do "failed placements" tend to occur at that particular office?
Before baby is born about 7%
After baby is born about 1%

How many pregnant women does the agency tend to have at a given time?
Approx. 75 per year

How many placements occurred in the past year?
In 2007 they placed the following
African American: 7
Asian/Pacific Islander: 1
Caucasian: 23
Bi-racial: 12
Hispanic: 3

Do they provide counseling for the expectant women?
Yes

What are the legalities with birthfathers?
termination of alleged birthfather’s rights by denial or waiver is done as soon as possible after match is made (if not before)
Termination of presumed birth father’s rights at relinquishment after baby is born

What is done if the birthmom does not know who the father is?
They have many routes and ways to go about getting a denial or waiver

Who pays for BM’s medical expenses (i.e. ultrasounds, and dr appointments)? Is this included in any of the set fee’s?
The adoptive parents do, but not all birth mother’s need assistance and we should know around the time of the match, how much help she is going to need

What happens if a BM decided to parent? What fees are we out?
We are out everything paid except the application fee, home study fee, and the Outreach Program fee

When are the fees due?
The fees are due at each step. We do not have to pay everything up front.

Are there any set guidelines on profile?
Nope. Just not spiral bound.

Wow. What a long process. It sure does seem like it will cost a lot. On the other hand, it appears that the agency you found has a really great placement rate. How exciting!

Thanks for the info ... I'll know who to come to if we feel led into adoption at some point in this journey.

Please no more brain farts - we want the goods on this type of activity, k?

Polly
